Sehome sits close enough to Bellingham Bay and Sehome Hill that its homes catch the same weather pattern the rest of the city deals with, just with its own mix of housing stock — older bungalows and craftsman-style homes near Western Washington University alongside newer infill construction and remodels. Board and batten siding shows up a lot in this neighborhood because it suits both: the vertical lines read as classic on an older home and clean/modern on a newer one. It's a good-looking profile, but it is also one of the least forgiving profiles to install badly, which matters more here than in a lot of places.

What Bellingham's Climate Does to Vertical Siding
Three things define siding performance here, and all three hit board and batten harder than a lapped horizontal profile:
- Salt air off Bellingham Bay. Salt-laden moisture accelerates corrosion on fasteners, flashing, and any exposed metal trim. It also speeds up the breakdown of finishes that aren't engineered to hold up outdoors long-term.
- Driving, wind-pushed rain. Bellingham doesn't just get steady drizzle — storms coming off the Sound push rain sideways into walls, and vertical battens create dozens of vertical seams that water can find if they aren't shingled and caulked correctly.
- A long moss and algae season. Cool, damp, shaded conditions for much of the year mean anything that holds moisture against the wall — wood that swells, caulk that's failed, a batten that's sitting flush instead of properly gapped — becomes a growth surface faster than it would somewhere drier.
None of this is unique to Sehome specifically, but a neighborhood with mature tree cover and homes packed closer together tends to hold shade and moisture a little longer after a storm than a wide-open lot would. That's a small factor, but on a material that's sensitive to it, small factors add up over twenty years.
Why We Only Install Board & Batten in Fiber Cement
Board and batten has traditionally been a wood siding profile, and it's still sold in engineered wood, vinyl panel, and fiber cement versions. We made the call years ago to install it exclusively in James Hardie fiber cement, and the reasoning is specific to this profile, not a blanket opinion on every product:
- Wood battens and boards move. Real wood and engineered wood both expand and contract with moisture. On a horizontal lap, that movement is minor. On vertical board and batten, that movement happens at every seam, which is exactly where you're depending on a tight, caulked joint to keep water out. Over time, movement works those joints loose.
- Vinyl board and batten can't hold a crisp reveal. Vinyl panels are hung on a track system that allows for thermal movement, which is fine for a lapped vinyl profile but tends to look wavy or hollow on a batten profile where flat, sharp lines are the whole point of the style.
- Fiber cement doesn't swell, rot, or feed moss the way wood does. James Hardie's boards and battens are dimensionally stable, which means the reveal you install is the reveal you still have in year fifteen, and the factory-applied ColorPlus finish doesn't give algae and moss the same foothold that a painted wood surface does.
We're not going to tell a homeowner that wood board and batten is a bad-looking product — it isn't, and plenty of houses around here still wear it well. But we've seen enough failed vertical seams and swollen batten strips on the maintenance and repair side of this business to know we don't want our name on that outcome. What a Correct Board & Batten Job Actually Involves
The board and batten profile fails in the field for one of a handful of predictable reasons, almost always tied to shortcuts at the install stage rather than the material itself. A correct job includes:
A drainage plane behind the siding
Fiber cement siding isn't the waterproofing layer — the weather-resistive barrier and flashing behind it is. On board and batten specifically, we install furring strips to create a rainscreen gap, so any water that does get past a seam has somewhere to drain and dry instead of sitting against the sheathing.
Correct batten spacing and fastening
James Hardie publishes exact fastener patterns and batten spacing for its board and batten and vertical panel systems. Battens need to land over structural framing or blocking, use the specified nail pattern, and leave the manufacturer's required gap at the bottom for drainage — not sit flush against the foundation or a deck ledger where water can wick up.
Proper flashing at every horizontal transition
Windows, doors, deck ledgers, and the base of the wall are where vertical siding is most likely to leak if flashing is skipped or improvised. Head flashing above openings and kickout flashing where a roofline meets a wall are non-negotiable on our jobs, not optional add-ons.
Sealed, not just caulked, seams
Every vertical joint gets backer rod and a quality sealant rated for exterior movement, applied to manufacturer spec — not a bead of caulk smeared over a gap and called done.

Our Process, Start to Finish
- Free on-site estimate. We look at your existing siding, sheathing condition, and how the house is oriented to wind and rain before we quote anything.
- Tear-off and sheathing check. Once old siding is off, we inspect the sheathing for rot or moisture damage — this is where problems that have been hidden for years get found and fixed before new siding goes on, not after.
- Weather-resistive barrier and rainscreen installation. This is the layer that actually keeps water out; the siding is the second line of defense, not the first.
- Flashing at every penetration and transition. Windows, doors, vents, and rooflines all get flashed to spec before any batten goes up.
- Board and batten installation to James Hardie's fastening and spacing specifications. Reveal lines get checked and re-checked as we go — a crooked batten is far more noticeable than a crooked lap line.
- Sealant, trim, and final inspection. Every seam sealed, every cut edge factory-primed or field-sealed, and a walkthrough with you before we call it finished.

Fiber cement is low-maintenance, not no-maintenance. In this climate, a short annual routine keeps a board and batten installation performing the way it should for decades:
- Rinse the siding once or twice a year to clear pollen, road film, and the early stages of moss or algae growth before it takes hold.
- Walk the wall line after major storms and check that the drainage gap at the base of the siding hasn't been blocked by mulch, soil buildup, or debris.
- Inspect caulked seams and trim joints yearly — sealant is the one component of the system with a shorter service life than the siding itself, and it's cheap to re-seal early versus expensive to fix water damage late.
- Keep gutters and downspouts clear so water isn't sheeting down the wall face during heavy rain events.
- Trim back vegetation that's shading or touching the siding directly, since constant shade and contact are what let moss establish on any exterior surface.
